Moving house can be a stressful time for everyone involved. There are so many things to remember and so much to pack, it can be tricky to know where to begin. The planning often needs to start a few months in advance and it’s difficult to know what to do and when to do it. Lucky for you, we have created the ultimate moving house checklist for you to print and follow step by step. This will ensure you don’t miss anything important and are ready for the big move when the day comes around.

Moving House Checklist

4 Weeks Ahead

  • Speak to your solicitor about exchanging contracts and finalise your moving date

  • Get removal estimates & book your chosen firm (You can view our removal costs here)

  • Order packing cases and materials (we can provide packing materials for you)

  • Order new curtains/carpets for the new property

  • Get a floor plan of the new property and plan where furniture will go

  • Declutter and dispose of unwanted items

  • Book the needed days off work (more than 1 day is advised as unpacking takes a considerable amount of time)

  • Make a full inventory of your belongings

  • Organsie a professional clen of your new home after the old tenants move out

Two Weeks Ahead

  • Inform utility companies that you’re moving

  • Complete the Post Office mail redirection form

  • Inform TV signal supplier and TV licence

  • Begin to pack the non-essentials

  • Run down the freezer

  • Get uyour phone number redirected

One Week Ahead

  • Inform the people on your finance and medical lists

  • Tell your council and ask for a statement on your council tax

  • Inform the car and household insurance firms

  • Send out change of address cards

  • Organise who will look after pets or children during the move

  • Transfer any plants you will be taking into pots

  • Get as much as your packing done as possible

  • Make sure all your clothes have been washed and dried, ready to pack

Two Days Ahead

  • Defrost the freezer

  • Prepare a box of moving day essentials (kettle, tea, coffe and snacks is always a good idea!)

  • Set aside things you will be transporting

  • Disconnect dishwashers

  • Label keys for the new owner

Moving Day

  • Strip the beds

  • Lay down sheets to protect floors

  • Keep your hoover aside for any last-minute cleaning

  • Label all your boxes (what’s inside and what room they need to go in)

  • Record all utility meter readings for water, electricity and gas

After Moving

  • Pay stamp duty land tax

  • Change locks

  • Take meter readings, keep records and contact utility companies

  • Account for each item on your inventory to make sure nothing is missing
