Moving house is a stressful time and the last thing you need is for a removal company to make your life more difficult. Whether you are moving next door, to a new town or even to a new country, choosing the right removal company can be vital in easing the stress on the big day. Here are our top 5 tips on how to choose a removal company.

How to Choose a Removal Company

1. Get Quotes

Ideally, you want to be sticking to the rules of three here. Get at least two quotes from respected removal companies well in advance of any proposed move date. Look at pricing and what they offer for that price. For example some removal companies will offer a packing and materials service, which could end up making the overall price cheaper in the long run.

Also be wary of online instant quotes – these are good if you have a straight forward move, but it is much better to get a surveyor round to assess the house for a quote as this is more likely to be accurate and reliable. With online quotes you could miss something by accident which will result in a price increase.

We offer a 5% discount for those who opt for a video survey, a newer and more convenient way to get an accurate quote.

2. Ask for an Assessment

Briefly touched upon above, it is always advised you go for an assessment over an online quote for reliability. It gives removal companies the chance to properly assess how long it will take to move your belongings and how much packing material will be required if needed.

This also gives you the chance to meet the company you are trusting with moving your belongings. You will get a feel of whether or not you would like to use them and are happy to have them handle your belongings.

3. Removals Insurance

You are trusting a company to safely move your belongings, which probably amounts to a hefty amount in total. It is important to check that the removal company you are choosing has insurance to cover your items should anything happen. This way you can have piece of mind during the process of moving house. Check the insurance limit and what their policy is on high value items and also if the insurance covers items you have packed yourself (usually insurance is only covered on items that the removal company have packed for you).

Now we’re moving are fully insured with up to £40,000 in Goods in Transit insurance and £2,000,000 liability insurance.

4. Reviews

The next best thing after word of mouth in checking a removal company’s reputation, is by checking their online reviews and testimonials. You should always go to review sites to check as this will offer unbiased reviews from previous customers. You will be able to check the removal companies positive reviews and also see if people have ever encountered any problems.

If the company has a negative review, how did they respond to the comment? Did they reply in a polite and helpful manner? If the majority of the reviews are negative, then of course, your best bet is to steer clear of this company as it may mean that they are not accredited or professional.

5. Extras

Finding a removal company who offer extras is always a bonus. A lot of larger removal companies will offer a packing service, which will make your life easier and the costs cheaper in the long run. If it’s a small move that’s taking place, does the company offer a simple man & van service to save you money? Or maybe you will need a helping hand with your furniture assembly once everything is out the van and in your new home.

Either way, it is these little bonuses and extras that can really help make your move smooth sailing and as stress-free as possible.
